Former SC Gov. Sanford eyes US House bid

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who left public life two years ago after mysteriously disappearing to visit his then-mistress in Argentina, is poised to re-enter the political arena.

Acknowledging reports that he is seriously weighing a congressional bid for the seat he once held, Sanford wrote in an email late Saturday: "To answer your question, yes the accounts are accurate." Sanford promised "further conversation on all this" at a later date.

The two-term governor was a rising Republican political star before he vanished from South Carolina for five days in 2009. Reporters were told he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, but he later tearfully acknowledged he was visiting Maria Belen Chapur, a woman he called his soul mate at a news conference announcing his affair. The two were engaged earlier this year.

The opening for Sanford comes after Rep. Tim Scott was appointed to fill the remaining two years of Sen. Jim DeMint's seat. DeMint announced earlier this month he was resigning.

News that Sanford, 52, may be interested in the seat comes days after his ex-wife, Jenny, appeared to be dipping her toe into the state's political waters.

She was reportedly on Gov. Nikki Haley's short list of candidates to fill the seat that went to Scott. Jenny Sanford later said she would think about a run for Scott's seat representing the coastal 1st Congressional District, the seat her ex-husband is now considering.

"I'd be crazy not to look at the race a little bit," she said Tuesday, before reports about Mark Sanford surfaced.

State Republicans said Scott plans to submit his letter of resignation from the House on Jan. 2, triggering a process of candidate filing and primaries leading up to a special election in May.

Mark Sanford knows the 1st District well. Elected to the seat in 1994 ? Jenny Sanford managed his first campaign and was a close adviser for most of his career ? he served three terms before voters elected him governor in 2002.

The former governor would bring name recognition and money to the race ? two things especially important due to the short campaign season and wide-open field.

Whether voters are ready to welcome Sanford back to politics is another issue.

"It's absolutely absurd. He just has so much baggage. He was such an embarrassment to the state, we don't need that," said Gloria Day, a retired attorney in Charleston.

He avoided impeachment but was censured by the Legislature. He also had to pay more than $70,000 in ethics fines ? still the largest in state history ? after AP investigations raised questions about his use of state, private and commercial aircraft.

Others said Sanford's fiscal record is what's important, and Sanford is known as a libertarian-leaning ideologue who railed against spending and bucked Republican Party leaders before anyone even coined the tea party movement.

"Mark Sanford is a reliable fiscal conservative so I, like many conservatives, would be delighted to see him in the race," said Joanne Jones, vice chairman of the Charleston Tea Party, though she noted she'll wait to see the entire field before throwing her support behind a candidate.

Scott will be sworn in Jan. 3 to replace DeMint, who announced his resignation earlier this month to lead The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. Scott, who would have to seek election in 2014, will become the state's first black U.S. senator and the first black Republican U.S. senator from the South since Reconstruction.

Candidates for Scott's seat must file by the end of January. Primaries will be held in March, with the general election in May.

State GOP Chairman Chad Connelly said as of Friday, 14 Republicans had expressed interest.

"Gov. Sanford getting in would certainly alter the dynamics. That list would go down significantly," he said.

Based on name recognition alone, Sanford's chances would be good in a runoff, he said.

Sanford has $1.2 million left in his state campaign coffers.

John Dietz of Daniel Island said the affair wouldn't affect his vote.

"He said he found his soul mate, and at one point in my life that's exactly how I felt. I empathized," said Dietz, a retiree who characterizes himself as a moderate.

Dietz said he was disappointed that Sanford could not work with his fellow Republicans in the Legislature.

"I did not necessarily agree with a lot of things he did politically," he said. "I'm very much neutral at this point."

Retired Presbyterian minister Dick Giffen of Mount Pleasant said he wouldn't support Sanford, but added that it was unrelated to the affair.

"He wasn't able to bring people together and get action done," Giffen said. "He didn't produce anything. ... I really wasn't impressed with him."

Sanford's contentious relationship with legislators seemed to worsen with each year of his tenure.

But longtime Republican activist and donor John Rainey, who convinced Sanford to run for governor after leaving Congress, said Sanford's last six months in office, following his tearful press conference, were his most effective.

Rainey said he hopes Sanford re-enters politics.

"He's finally learned how to do it. Mark now understands the necessity of and art of compromise. It's not my way or the highway," said Rainey, who was chairman of the Board of Economic Advisors during Sanford's tenure.

Sanford's engagement to Chapur may improve his standing with voters.

"Think of all that's happened since 2009. That's old news," said Rainey, rattling off a list of political scandals. "Especially in the South, we're about redemption. I don't think he's got a problem."

Top 5 Tips for a Healthy Christmas - Langlands Health & Fitness

Make healthy choices this festive season!

Make healthy choices this festive season!

Prevent that other traditional seasonal event ? winter weight gain!

?

Christmas is almost upon us and because of it?s timing this year, the partying for some has already begun! Use these simple tips to help stay fit and healthy this year and get a head start on that Resolution.

1. Routine, Routine, Routine

Keep as close to your current exercise plan as possible. Parties to go to? Then squeeze in a quick run or workout beforehand or make sure that you have a tough session the day after a splurge (ie Boxing Day). Your body will thank you for it in the long term and you will feel infinitely better in the short term. The key here is planning ? identify where in your Christmas schedule you?ll have some time and book in a little you time.

2. Portion Control

This can be the toughest thing to manage at Christmas. It?s all too easy to eat until you literally feel as if you?re going to burst. Instead, try to stop before you feel full ? the hormones which tell us we are full actually don?t kick in until we are past the point of no return. So this year, eat until you feel about 80% full and in 15 minutes your brain will have caught up.

3. Choose the Right Party Foods

Most party foods are simple carbohydrates or very high in refined sugar or grains. Try to make intelligent snack choices ? go for unsalted nuts, smoked salmon or veggie bites. It?s very easy for the foods that surround the main Christmas meal to be the ones which do all the damage.

4. Drink Sensibly

We consume more alcohol over the festive period than at any other point in the year ? remember, you can still have fun without overdoing it! Also make your drink choices wise ones, champagne is a good low-calorie option as each glass equates to only around 80 calories and the resveratrol in red wine does confer some health benefits (although these are negated by over-consumption). Again, balance is key ? if you do decide to let your hair down, make sure you make up for it the next day (eat less and get out and exercise!).

5. Stay Hydrated

What with all this drinking, we often forget to keep taking in water. As well as staving off the next day?s hangover, alternating alcohol with water will also help to fill you up and mean that you eat less.

The main thing to remember is to enjoy the next couple of weeks with your friends and family. This time of year can do wonders for our mood ? especially important for us Scots, normally hunkering down in our dark, wet winters. If you do ?fall off the wagon? don?t beat yourself up about it too much, just resolve to be better the next day.

Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Happy New Year to you all from Gemma and I!

Alasdair

The Rise of the Singing Christmas Tree

Singing Christmas tree 2008. Living Christmas Tree shows are growing more elaborate

Photograph by Jim Moore/Flickr.

With the rise of megachurch, "Singing Christmas Tree" pageants have become increasingly popular. In 2011, Neil J. Young examined their rise. The article is reprinted below.

Across the country, churches will soon be groaning at full capacity as millions of Americans, from the deeply devout to the twice-a-year attendees, pack their local congregations to participate in a Christmas Eve service. But this month, some of those churches will also present what has become a tradition in the modern evangelical megachurch: the Singing Christmas Tree. In these productions, church choirs perform a musical celebration while standing inside an enormous Christmas tree platform that reaches to the ceiling, often accompanied by extravagant light shows, dancing church members, and sometimes even fireworks. Displaying all the kitsch and some of the camp of your favorite Broadway musical, Singing Christmas Tree pageants represent the quintessence of the modern megachurch experience: oversized, ostentatious, and a strange blend of the sacred and the secular. Here?s one glitzy production:

Like many of the showier elements of the modern megachurch, the Singing Christmas Tree had humble origins. The first Singing Christmas Tree likely took place in 1933 when a music professor at Belhaven College, a Christian liberal arts college in Jackson, Miss., teamed up with an engineer to craft a small wooden tree frame for the school?s all-female choir to stand in as it performed a series of Christmas carols. The concert took place outside so that members of the community could enjoy the event, and outdoor Singing Christmas Trees began to pop up on college campuses and in city parks in other cities throughout the South during the 1940s and ?50s.

Churches, most often Baptist congregations, got in on the act in the 1960s and ?70s, setting up Christmas tree platforms inside their congregations and inviting community members to their productions. Most of these productions were simple affairs?the church choir was arranged on a tiered structure draped in garland boughs and red ribbons. There it would sing through a medley of Christmas hymns. The pastor would read the account of Jesus? birth from the Gospel of Luke while a handful of church members re-enacted the nativity scene. Nativity plays have always figured prominently in American churches? holiday celebrations. But the Singing Christmas Tree pageants that became popular in evangelical circles in the late 20th century inadvertently brought the season?s secular trappings directly into churches? Christmas observances in a way that dramatic recreations of the first Christmas in Bethlehem had previously avoided.

(AP) ? The Connecticut town in mourning over the loss of 20 children and six school workers in the December school massacre has been overwhelmed by gifts from across the world.

More than $2.6 million in donations has poured into Newtown's official memorial fund. The United Way is administering the fund without charge. Hundreds of thousands of dollars also have been collected in private fundraisers to pay for funerals, memorials or even a new school to replace Sandy Hook Elementary where the shootings occurred just over a week ago.

Saturday, all the children of Newtown were invited to an event to choose from among hundreds of donated toys.

The local United Way is asking people to stop sending toys and, instead, do charitable work or make a donation in the victims' names.

EPA finalizes boiler rule to reduce air pollution

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Environmental Protection Agency finalized rules Friday aimed at reducing toxic air pollution from industrial boilers and incinerators while offering industry more flexibility and lower costs to comply with the new standards.

Obama administration officials said most of the 1.5 million boilers nationwide are not covered by the regulation since they are too small or emit too little pollution to warrant controls.

The changes will require pollution controls at about 2,300 of the largest and most polluting boilers nationwide, including those found at refineries and chemical plants. Those boilers will have three years to comply and could be granted a fourth year if they need to install pollution controls.

Another 197,000 smaller boilers would be able to meet the rule through routine tune-ups.

The EPA said it cut the cost of compliance by about $1.5 billion.

Republicans have opposed the environmental regulations as detrimental to business during tough economic times and unsuccessfully tried to slow down the new rules in Congress.

The EPA estimated that despite the flexibility and the decision to target the largest polluters, the rules will still provide significant health benefits. The new standards will prevent up to 8,100 premature deaths, 5,100 heart attacks and 52,000 asthma attacks, according to the agency.

EPA estimated that Americans would receive $13 to $29 in health benefits for every dollar spent to meet the final standards and lead to a small net increase in jobs.

Environmental groups said the rules were not as stringent as they had hoped but would help Americans breathe cleaner air. "These standards are a mixed bag," said John Walke, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council's Clean Air Program.

Industry groups said the regulations were still overly burdensome. Jay Timmons, president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, said the rules were "far from being realistic" and accused the EPA of pushing "another costly and crippling regulation at a time when our economy is on the brink."

Industrial boilers burn coal and other fuels to generate steam and hot water for heat and electricity. After coal-fired power plants, boilers are the nation's second-largest source of mercury emissions, a potent neurotoxin. But boilers are among a handful of pollution sources that still have no standards for toxic emissions.

Oracle buying software co. Eloqua for about $811M - Washington ...

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. (AP) ? Business-software maker Oracle is adding to its cloud-computing capabilities with an $810.8 million purchase of software maker Eloqua.

Oracle said Thursday that buying Eloqua will bolster its "cloud" technology for helping companies make decisions on their marketing, sales and customer support. Cloud computing refers to the concept of making software available for anyone with an Internet-connected device, rather than installing it on company computers.

The Redwood Shores, Calif., company, which makes database software and applications that automate administrative tasks, this summer announced a slate of cloud products in an attempt to capitalize on the fast-growing area.

Oracle Corp. said it will pay $23.50 per share for Eloqua Inc., 31 percent above the company's closing price of $17.92 Wednesday.

The companies value the deal at approximately $871 million. Vienna, Va.-based Eloqua currently has about 34.5 million outstanding shares, according to FactSet.

Eloqua's board unanimously approved the deal. The acquisition, which still needs approval from Eloqua shareholders, is expected to close in 2013's first half.

Shares of Oracle fell 10 cents to $33.99 in premarket trading. Eloqua shares popped $5.43, or 30 percent, to $23.35.

Adoption groups dismayed by proposed Russian ban

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S.-based advocates of international adoption, who have grown accustomed to discouraging news in recent years, have a new cause for dismay: a bill moving through Russia's parliament that would bar Americans from adopting Russian children.

The measure, which won overwhelming approval Friday in the lower house of parliament, is retaliation for a new U.S. law imposing sanctions on Russians deemed to be human rights violators.

"It's two countries duking it out," said Adam Pertman of the Donaldson Adoption Institute. "The adults are playing politics, and it's unfortunate to the extreme that children are being used as pawns."

The fate of the bill is uncertain. It needs approval by parliament's upper house and by President Vladimir Putin. Yet already it has added to an array of controversies and policy changes that have muddled the image of international adoption in the U.S.

Adoptions from abroad seemed to be on a perpetual upswing but peaked at 22,884 in 2004 and have declined steadily since then to 9,319 in 2011, because of factors ranging from corruption and fraud to nationalist pride.

In the case of Russia, UNICEF estimates it has more than 700,000 orphans and abandoned children. More than 60,000 of them have been adopted by Americans over the past 20 years, but the annual figure has plummeted from 5,862 in 2004 to 962 in 2011.

Chuck Johnson, CEO of the National Council for Adoption, said there is a faction of Russian politicians who have long-term antipathy toward foreign adoptions and have seized upon the pending bill as a vehicle for their cause.

"The Russian Duma is ignoring the many thousands of very happy children who have been adopted by loving U.S. families," Johnson said. "The bottom line is children should not fall victim to senseless politicking."

Among the adoption advocates who have been following the Moscow events closely is Alexander D'Jamoos, a 21-year-old sophomore at the University of Texas.

D'Jamoos, who was born without legs, grew up in one of the many Russian orphanages that accommodate children with disabilities. In 2006, at age 15, he was flown to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, where physicians fitted him with prosthesis to enable him to walk.

The Dallas couple who had agreed to host him temporarily, Helene and Michael D'Jamoos, became so fond of him that they proceeded to adopt him in 2007. Since then, the young man has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, became a talented skier, and is pursuing studies in government, international relations and Russian.

He has been following the progress of the proposed adoption ban in Russia with growing anger.

"It uses children as a tool for political demagoguery," he said. "It's extremely insensitive to children in Russia who've spent their whole lives in those orphanages, and insulting to the happy families here in the U.S. who have adopted Russian children."

Russia has tried to increase domestic adoptions over the past several years, but there also has been resentment about adoptions by Americans, fueled by a few high-profile incidents.

In 2010, a Tennessee woman sent her 7-year-old adopted Russian son back to Moscow on a plane alone, saying he had emotional problems and she could no longer care for him. In 2008, a Russian toddler adopted by a Virginia family died after his father left him in a hot car for hours; the father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

According to the National Council for Adoption, 19 Russian adoptees have died at the hands of their American parents. Those deaths were among the factors that led to a painstakingly negotiated U.S.-Russia adoption agreement that took effect Nov. 1.

The agreement tightens oversight of adoption agencies, requires prospective adoptive parents to complete up to 80 hours of training and permits Russia to engage in post-adoption monitoring of children adopted by U.S. families.

The bill pending in Moscow would nullify that agreement. Its fate may rest with Putin, who on Thursday described the measure as a legitimate response to the new U.S. law targeting human rights violators but did not specify whether he would sign it.

The U.S. law, called the Magnitsky Act, stems from the case of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who was arrested after accusing officials of a $230 million tax fraud. He was repeatedly denied medical treatment and died in jail in 2009. Russian rights groups claim he was severely beaten and accused the Kremlin of failing to prosecute those responsible.

Regarding the retaliatory adoption ban, the U.S. says it would needlessly stop hundreds of Russian children from finding families.

"The welfare of children is simply too important to be linked to other issues in our bilateral relationship," U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul said in a statement.

U.S.-based adoption advocates indicated there were intensive efforts under way to derail the bill.

The Joint Council on International Children's Services, which represents many U.S. groups interested in adoption and child welfare, said it was working with both American and Russian officials to resolve the matter, urging them to "put the needs and best interest of each child as the primary consideration."

Others tracking progress of the bill include Denise Bierly of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys, who called it "a significant step backward for the welfare of children," and Bill Blacquiere of Bethany Christian Services, one of the largest U.S. adoption agencies.

Blacquiere said that child welfare needs in Russia are extensive, and that its special-needs children would be better served if Russia availed itself of American expertise rather than strain bilateral relations. Russia has taken some steps to improve its foster care system and move more children out of orphanages, he said, but needs to invest more government funds.

Several adoption advocates suggested that the Russian bill was damaging even if it doesn't become law.

"Even if it just bravado, it still does harm," said Adam Pertman, the Donaldson Institute's executive director. "International adoption is already cast in a bad light, and some people will say, 'This is just a minefield. I'm not going to go there.' The losers are the children."

Nokia, RIM settle old disputes in new patent pact

HELSINKI (AP) ? Nokia Corp. and Canadian smartphone rival Research In Motion have agreed on a new patent licensing pact which will end all existing litigation between the two struggling companies, the Finnish firm said Friday.

The agreement includes a "one-time payment and on-going payments, all from RIM to Nokia," Nokia said, but did not disclose "confidential" terms.

Last month, Nokia sued the Blackberry maker for breach of contract in Britain, the United States and Canada over cellular patents they agreed in 2003. RIM claimed the license ? which covered patents on "standards-essential" technologies for mobile devices? should also have covered patents for non-essential parts, but the Arbitration Institute of Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ruled against RIM's claims.

Major manufacturers of phones and wireless equipment are increasingly turning to patent litigation as they jockey for an edge to expand their share of the rapidly growing smartphone market.

Nokia is among leading patent holders in the wireless industry. It has already received a $565 million royalty payment from Apple Inc. to settle long-standing patent disputes and filed claims in the United States and Germany alleging that products from HTC Corp. and Viewsonic Corp. infringe a number of its patents.

The company says it has invested ?45 billion ($60 billion) during the last 20 years in research and development and has one of the wireless industry's largest IPR portfolios claiming some 10,000 patent families.

Nokia's share price closed down 3.5 percent at ?3.05 on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

City Council could vote soon on whether to close Whitehaven Golf Course

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - The Memphis City Council will soon vote whether to close the Whitehaven golf course.

As we first reported, Councilman Edmund Ford, Junior, who is also a math teacher, found questionable cost hikes at the golf course. The council saw it for themselves Tuesday.

A vote to close the Whitehaven golf course to save the City of Memphis money has opened Pandora's Box.

"Nothing in East Memphis is closing down, whether they say it or not," said golfer and Shelby County Commissioner Sidney Chism, who attended the city council meeting as a citizen, because he enjoys golfing at Whitehaven.

The city originally had four courses on the chopping block.

"All of them are in most of the urban areas with a heavy concentration of people of colors," said Chism.

Shelby County Commissioner Sidney Chism attended Tuesday's Memphis City Council committee meeting, as a citizen, because he golfs at Whitehaven.

"I want to make sure every council member has all the information," said Memphis City Councilman Edmund Ford, Jr.

Councilman Edmund Ford, Jr. called for an audit of all city golf courses. Whitehaven's expenses raised some questions.

Tuesday, he showed his peers those findings.

"I believe that more eyes are open and I believe people want to see more equality," said Ford.

For example, the cost to fertilize Whitehaven's 9-hole golf course is the same as the 18-hole golf courses.

"They know something is happening within the confines of those numbers and they need to figure it out," said Chism.

In the committee meeting, no one could answer the definition of "rent" in the golf course's annual budget.

Ford said the red flag was a nearly 31 percent jump in the "rent" category from 2011 to 2012.

Until the issue is resolved, Crockett, Pine Hill, Riverside, and Whitehaven are closed for the winter.

They hope to complete an audit by early next year.

56 Insurance Carriers Deemed High Performers in Texas Work ...

Texas workers? compensation system regulators report that 56 insurance carriers have been deemed high performers in the system.

Announcing the results of the fourth Insurance Carrier Performance Based Oversight assessment Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers? Compensation (TDI-DWC) said out of the 110 insurance carriers reviewed, 56 were deemed as high performers; 53 were deemed average performers and one carrier was deemed as a poor performer.

Based on the Performance Based Oversight (PBO) assessment, insurance carriers are placed into regulatory tiers: poor performers, average performers, and consistently high performers. The TDI-DWC will focus its regulatory oversight on the poor performers, as well as offer incentives within each tier that promote greater overall compliance and performance.

Insurance carriers were assessed on the timeliness of:

  • Medical bill processing,
  • Payment of the initial Temporary Income Benefits (TIBs) check,
  • Reporting medical billing data, and
  • Reporting the initial payment of TIBs to the TDI-DWC.

The TDI-DWC is required to monitor workers? compensation system participants? compliance with the Texas Workers? Compensation Act and TDI-DWC rules and to correct noncompliant behavior. Compliance objectives are achieved through PBO, data monitoring, complaint handling, entity audits, and when appropriate, enforcement actions.

The results of this assessment and a listing of the assessed insurance carriers are posted on the TDI website at http://www.tdi.texas.gov/wc/pbo/pbo.html. Not all insurance carriers are assessed and placed into a regulatory tier.

Health care providers will be assessed separately in 2013.

Late Pope Paul VI takes step toward sainthood

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican moved the late Pope Paul VI, who died in 1978 after leading the Roman Catholic Church for 15 years and oversaw the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council in 1965, a step closer on Thursday to sainthood.

The Vatican said Pope Benedict had approved a decree recognizing the "heroic virtues" of Paul VI, who was born Giovanni Battista Montini in 1897 and held numerous high positions in the Church before he became pope in 1963.

The recognition of heroic virtues, which means the person lived a exemplary Christian life, is an early step in the sainthood process. The move means that Paul VI could be beatified if the Vatican ascertains that a miracle can be attributed to his intercession with God.

Another miracle would be necessary after the beatification in order for him to be made a saint.

Paul VI oversaw the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. The Council was one of the most important events in modern Church history, introducing major changes in liturgy and in Catholic dialogue with other religions.

He also led the Church in one of its most turbulent periods in modern history, as deep cultural changes took root around the world in the 1960s.

Paul VI is also remembered for his major encyclical Humane Vitae in 1978, which banned artificial birth control.

The Ugly Duckling House | DIY Home Improvement Blog: Whack a ...

There is a wall that lies between the dining room and kitchen. ?And I wanna whack it with a hammer.

While the kitchen is already on the large size for this house (the extra space near the sliding glass door makes it feel roomy), the wall that separates the two rooms feels dated to me. ?Homes nowadays are more open in terms of floor plans, and the dining room just feels more cramped by comparison.
Funny story: I had difficulty finding a photo taken of the other side of this wall. ?I guess it's not very blog-worthy. ?The last pic I can find where I took a picture of the wall (and not the sliding glass door next to it) is from back in 2010 when my ex and I were putting in the floor. ?And I snapped this picture of his dog, Colby, because Colby is awesome. ?I miss him. ?Complete tangent ended.

UPDATE: found another picture from when I bought a clearance table from Pier1. ?It's not of the entire wall, but it pretty much looks exactly like this right now. ?Only with mail all over the table top.

So, my mom suggested this the other day (after I showed her how to use Pinterest - I know, 2.7 million Pinterest followers and Mom wasn't one of 'em until last week), and I've been dwelling on it ever since:
This layout is pretty similar to my own. ?If you took this picture in my living room, facing my dining room, the kitchen would be off to the right, just as it is in this pic. ?The major differences I see (apart from general style preferences) are that the two slim walls between the living and dining room have been cut out (I'm guessing the columns are left for load-bearing purposes from a second floor) and the wall between the kitchen and dining room is a half-wall instead of a full one like it is in my house.

I don't plan to cut out the slim walls that separate the living and dining rooms. ?I am instead in favor of floor to ceiling built-ins with a bright pop of color similar to the ones Young House Love painted in their dining room (with a different color of course, since my dining room will be painted a deep teal color of some sort).

But...

The idea of a half wall from the dining room into the kitchen appeals to me for four reasons:

  • If I can create more of an open feel in this house, it will give the illusion of more space, which is always a good thing when I try to sell it someday;
  • I don't want to remove the wall entirely because I've already installed the floor. ?Ripping out the whole wall means re-doing the floor, and that shit is not going to happen. Ever. Again.
  • it's one less wall to have to skim coat - which is a total BS reason, but there is wallpaper in the kitchen, too - and my nightmare isn't over yet;
  • Did I mention that I get to demo? ?The best part of DIY.

There is always a chance with a floor plan like mine that the wall is load-bearing, so I'll have to figure that out before I make any major changes to that wall. ?But I'm very tempted to whack it with a hammer now that the idea of ripping out a wall is in my head. ?Maybe just a little whack? ?(In a hammer way, not a Whitney Houston way.). ?

What do you think of the half wall idea? ?Maybe create a wide counter on the top of the wall and a couple of bar stools for seating?

Our deep relationship with water

Jonathon Keats, contributor

PAR71728.jpg

(Image: Abbas/Magnum Photos)

FIFTEEN centuries before Coca-Cola and Pepsi began competing over the bottled water industry, the undisputed market leader was the Catholic Church. Pilgrims were the customers, drawn to holy wells by reports of cures for everything from bellyaches to madness.

As James Salzman relates in Drinking Water, there was often some truth to the hype as certain waters naturally amassed medicinal minerals including bicarbonate and lithium from the earth. "The precise composition of the water depends on the local geology," Salzman writes, "and, it turns out, so does the water's therapeutic value."

The scope of Salzman's book is impressive, encompassing everything from the construction of Roman aqueducts to subsidised water purification in Zambia. While he is sometimes repetitive, he is comprehensive.

drinkingwater-cover2.jpg

Most enlightening is the deep historical context he provides for present-day debates. For instance, the principle that access to safe drinking water is a human right - as proclaimed by the United Nations - can be traced back to biblical times. According to the Jewish Talmud, waterways "belong to every man". Salzman finds similar ideas embedded in the ancient Indigenous Australian and Bedouin cultures.

The contrasting perception of water as a commodity to be sold is closely tied to the history of bottling, which Salzman meticulously traces from medieval holy wells to the luxury spas popular with Victorian elites through the launch of Perrier as a global brand in the 1970s.

Our ideas about water have arguably grown more muddied over the centuries, culminating in the current sale of municipal tap water by Coca-Cola and Pepsi in branded servings - at up to a 10,000-fold profit. Of course all the packaging and transportation takes energy, so the real price is paid by the environment, which is now increasingly prone to drought.

Email marketing is a great way to reach your clients and targeted audience?newsletters, e-blasts, advertising in emails, and sending out educational information on your business or products are just a few ways to use email marketing.

But why should your business use those tactics, and what are the advantages?

Because new research conducted in 2012 has found that companies are using email marketing as definite way to reach their audience, and continue to make it a large part of their marketing budgets moving forward in 2013. ?Furthermore, new trends show that 65 percent of companies plan to integrate email marketing with social media.

So this is great news, right? Well, if you know how to properly use it and integrate it into your business? marketing strategy. Here are a couple tips and tricks to help your company out:

Plan of action: Understand how you brand yourself as a company, and how you want the content to go out to clients or contacts.? Make sure that each email or e-blast you send out has a specific course of action. Ask your marketing team, is this email more personal, are we targeting a specific type of business, or a selected group of people.

It needs to be easy:? Make signup for your company?s email easy and effortless.? People are not going to signup for your newsletter if there are a million questions in the required fields.? Make sure you ask the important stuff, and keep it short.? People?s attention spans are declining, as we have said before it?s an attention economy out there. Keep in mind, there is higher open rate opportunity when people have opted-in to receive your emails. Don?t assume because you have someone?s email address from another source that they will want your e-blast.

Understand Spam: A lot of companies and people become victims of sending spam emails without even knowing it and it can be devastating to their communication with clients and reputation. Basically people have to sign up for your emails on their own and you have to give them the opportunity to unsubscribe. If not, your server could get black listed. To find out more read up on the CAN-SPAM act.

Use different methods: Think of creative ways to get your audiences? attention.? Write good subject lines, offer coupons, find out when their birthdays (add in sign up field) and offer a free or discounted service or product.? People like when they are remembered, and most of all they love free stuff. This not only starts to create a relationship with your clients, but it will get them to come back to your site to use their free coupons and discounted products.

Think about mobile: Mobile is becoming king, and continuing to rise.? So it wouldn?t hurt to think about how to integrate mobile into your business? email marketing. Think about how your email will look on different mobile devices: determine if there is too much content; review if your company?s email template fits; overall, is it look aesthetically pleasing.? These are all things to keep in consideration; because the latest research found that emails opened on mobile devices grew 82.4 percent!

Good luck on your email marketing adventure! To find out more on how to use email marketing attend our upcoming workshop on the The Ins & Outs Email Marketing.
